Re-entry Mediation - short video

Re-entry mediation is a specialized form of mediation aimed at people who are currently incarcerated or who have recently been released. It provides an opportunity to have confidential conversations with important people in their lives about whatever is important to support re-entry planning.

If you are within 12 months from release from incarceration or within 3 months post-release or someone close to you is, and you have things to talk about that will impact the re-entry, then this program is for you. Up to 3 two hour pre-release or post-release sessions are guided by specially trained mediators that may lead you to a better understanding and agreement on key issues.

Research in Maryland, where the Program originated and has been running for over 15 years, shows their Program has led to a significant reduction in recidivism as well as impacting homelessness and improving relationships. A single session can reduce re-incarceration risk by 10% and subsequent sessions by 7%.

Contact your local community mediation center to see if the re-entry program currently exists in your local area or contact your case manager/worker to ask about services.

Even if you don’t think you have a conflict, this can be a chance to have a private, meaningful conversation with important people in your life to help you make or clarify plans before or after your release. Common topics for planning purposes include housing, children, drugs, transport and work.

This confidential program is independent of any correctional facility or post-release agency but is implemented with the support of their staff.
